Early Childhood

Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Program

Sacred Heart Catholic School offers a pre-kindergarten program for children four years old and a full-day kindergarten program for children five years old.  Teachers provide a caring, warm, and safe environment where children develop at their own pace.  We believe that early childhood is a journey, not a race, and that each child is considered unique and a special gift from God.

Parents as Partners

Parents are the primary educators of children and a teacher’s most valuable resource.  Mothers and fathers are invited to share their time and talent with Sacred Heart Catholic School. Teachers encourage parents to communicate openly and regularly.  In addition to prescheduled parent-teacher conferences, parents are able to meet with faculty on an as needed basis.

The Early Childhood Program offers readiness activities that help each child to grow emotionally, socially, mentally, spiritually, and physically.  The curriculum follows guidelines established by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in the areas of Religion, Mathematics, Language, Reading Readiness, Social Studies, Science, Computers, Library Skills, Music, and Art.

Children are encouraged to develop a positive self-image in relationship to a loving God. The school’s atmosphere promotes kindness and acceptance as well as an appreciation for God’s wonderful world.

Personal-Social Development

The Early Childhood Program believes that the primary goal for children ages four and five is personal and social development.  Learning to interact with adults and other children is very important.  The Program focuses on teaching life skills in order to make friends, settle differences, care for one’s belongings, respect oneself and others, follow directions, and adapt to being separated from loved ones.

Making Learning Fun

The Early Childhood Program invites special guests to talk to the children and help them make sense of their world.  The many visitors to the Early Childhood Program include firemen, “Officer Friendly,” dental hygienists, Auntie Annie’s Pretzels and the seat belt safety program.

Children also participate in several field trips and activities throughout the year. Annual highlights include outings to Highland Orchards, the Elmwood Zoo, and local theatres. The butterfly and baby chicks hatching projects are also classroom favorites.

School is Cool!

The Early Childhood Program is an integral part of the overall school community.  The students participate in monthly Projects, school-wide buddy program and Thanksgiving Food Drive. The Kindergarten children also partake in the school liturgies and Christmas Pageant.
